Steven Gwynne, National Research Council Canada. Human behavior is a vital component of the evacuation process and in life safety. Even if not explicitly stated, all models employed during the design process (including those embedded within regulatory codes) make broad assumptions regarding evacuee behavior. These assumptions will directly influence the outcome of the design process. This course will provide an overview of human behavior in a fire. It will discuss the factors that affect this behavior, the responses that can be expected and the impact that they have on the assessment of egress performance.
