Overview
The Larimer County Community Development Department is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced individual to join our team as a Building Permit Technician!

This position performs a range of responsible, specialized, and technical administrative and clerical duties in support of the public, developers, contractors, homeowners, and internal staff. The Building Permit Technician serves as a key point of contact by responding to inquiries, explaining policies and procedures, and ensuring building permit applications and plans are accurately received, reviewed, and routed for processing.

The typical schedule for this position is Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:30pm.

Responsibilities
What you’ll be doing:

  • Explain policies and procedures on the Building Code to current and prospective applicants to facilitate the permit application and review process.
  • Respond to technical questions and complaints and provides information to the public and referral agencies over the phone and at the counter.
  • Enter data in the computer system for all permit applications, tracks the data from beginning to completion of the application, and maintains the individual permit files and accuracy of information.
  • Screen all permit applications, including structural permits, to ensure compliance with submittal requirements; checks for accuracy, completeness, compliance, and makes corrections as needed; conducts research if needed and makes necessary corrections to comply with the application process.
  • Coordinate, process, and perform administrative review on all permit applications; assesses final fee calculations; adds square footage calculations in the computer and computes fees based on valuation.
  • Conducts research on properties for existing building permits and processes renewal applications of building permits.
  • Research and track inspections needed to coordinate, organize, and prepare miscellaneous and structural permit expiration notices. Provides follow up calls to permit holders regarding expiration letters and enforces the building code policy for expiration and extension.
  • Process Certificate of Occupancy documents after final inspections are approved.
  • Process contractor licensing applications and renewals.

What we’re looking for:

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
  • Have knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives as related to building permit processing, International Building, Mechanical,
  • Plumbing and related Codes, construction industry terminology and residential construction codes.
  • Understand the scope and application of laws and regulations pertaining to a Building program.
  • Use filing and record keeping systems.
  • Use basic accounting or cashiering principles and practices.
  • Perform technical duties in support of the Building Division.
  • Have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Have good customer service skills.

Qualifications

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.

Two (2) years of experience in building construction, building code compliance, and/or land use/zoning code required.
