Politics & Code 101: Advocacy for the Code Official
Instructor: Andre Jaen
Building codes don’t exist in a vacuum—they’re shaped and implemented through political decisions at every level of government. This class helps code officials understand their vital role in that process. Participants will explore how legislative and local government actions influence code adoption, enforcement, and evolution, and how officials can ethically and effectively engage in advocacy. The session covers Colorado’s legislative structure, key decision makers, the difference between advocacy and lobbying, and real examples showing how policy affects building safety, housing, and energy performance. Practical strategies for engaging with local councils, boards, and legislators will help strengthen the voice of the code community while maintaining credibility and neutrality.
