The Chief Building Official (CBO) is responsible for the operations of the Building Division including supervisory, administrative, and technical work in the enforcement of building codes. The CBO exercises supervision over building officials, building inspectors, plans examiners, permit technicians, and other technical personnel as assigned.

The ideal candidate will be an approachable professional with a strong knowledge of building codes, experience with process improvement, and a collaborative approach to leadership. The candidate must be an excellent communicator and able to balance competing needs and priorities.

The candidate must have a proficient level of knowledge of: 

Applicable municipal, state, building, addressing, and sign codes; 

Construction principles and practices; 

Ability to examine, interpret, and work from building plans and specifications;

Ability to enforce regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality; and 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, elected/appointed officials, and the general public.

The essential functions of this position include: 

Coordinating the review of construction plans, building permits, and building inspections to ensure compliance with all relevant codes, ordinances, and accessibility laws; 

Administering construction and addressing regulations from project conception through completion; 

Overseeing code adoption, interpretation, and enforcement; 

Performing residential and commercial plan reviews as well as building inspections as needed; 

Training, coaching, and supervising staff; and 

Meeting with and counsels design professionals, builders, contractors, property owners, and the general public concerning building code and zoning ordinance.

Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent (GED); 

Five (5) years experience in building inspection and plan review; 

Two (2) years supervisory experience; 

Valid Colorado Driver’s License (or equivalent) and satisfactory driving record; 

Any equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred:  Bachelor’s degree in architecture, construction, design, or related field;  International Code Council (ICC) certified Building Official; 

ICC certified Combination Inspector; 

ICC certified Combination Plans Examiner.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary range for the Chief Building Official is $74,373 – $107,841.
