Appointments may be made at the Building Inspector I, II, or III level depending on qualifications, department needs, and budget availability. Levels are distinguished by additional experience and certifications obtained (see Minimum Qualifications below).

 

The City of Littleton has an opening for a structural or combination inspector to join our talented team of Building Inspectors in providing outstanding customer service, working with contractors and the public, and ensuring code compliance for commercial, residential, and industrial structures throughout our community.

 

The ideal candidate has enjoys working outside the office and has work experience in building or construction structural inspection. The ideal candidate is friendly, enjoys working with people, and can explain building or construction related terminology and code compliance issues in a way that helps people understand and move forward with their projects efficiently.

This full-time position is non-exempt per FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.

 

Work Schedule:  This full-time position will work 7:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

– Performs field inspections using reviewed plans on all permitted projects and verifies that the project is constructed as per the approved plans and conforms to the model building codes.

– Provides the builder or contractor representative with a written inspection report (acceptance or deficiency report) and a notice of any corrections necessary and re-inspects construction per appropriate model codes.

– Operates a city vehicle and conducts daily building inspections at construction sites.
– Prepares records of inspection requests and fills out reports for field inspections.  Inputs inspection information into computer.

– Prepares a daily work schedule and maintains a daily inspection log of activities and enters inspection activities into computer records.

– Issues stop work orders on projects that require but lack a building permit and tracks orders after issuance.

– Reviews construction plans for compliance with applicable building codes and may assist with issuance of building permits, as required.

– Answers questions by telephone and in person regarding the technical requirements of the appropriate model codes from builders, contractors, subcontractors, individual homeowners, and other customers.

– Assists customers and visitors at the service counter that include builders, contractors, subcontractors, homeowners, general public, and city staff members.

– Explains laws, ordinances, and adopted codes to builders, contractors, design professionals, property owners, and the general public and members of city staff.

– Communicates with angry and/or uncooperative citizens and contractors and works with builders and the public to resolve problems and de-escalate appropriately.

– Prepares letters to customers regarding model code requirements and inspection results.

– Schedules courtesy appointments with citizens at their property concerning any code requirements or construction practices that pertain to property or projects.

– Coordinates work with other departments that include engineering, planning, zoning, landscaping, fire, business and industry, police, and streets.

– May serve as an Emergency Worker and may also respond to after-hour structure-related requests from the Littleton Police Department or South Metro Fire Rescue.

– Performs similar duties and projects as required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Building Inspector I (Salary range: $23.40 – $35.10)

  • Requires high school diploma or equivalent; and
  • A minimum of one (1) year of previous work experience in building inspection, construction plans design, review, or inspection; construction or an inspection-related position; or an equivalent combination of education, formal training, and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties/responsibilities of the position.
  • At least one of the following certifications or licenses is required at time of hire:
  • B1 Residential Building Inspector certification; or
  • B2 Commercial Building Inspector certification; or
  • An active State of Colorado Master or Journeyman Plumber’s license; or
  • An active State of Colorado Master or Journeyman Electrician’s license

In addition to one of the certifications or licenses above, one (1) of the following additional certifications or licenses are required within six (6) months of hire for a total of two (2) different certifications and/or licenses:

  • B1 Residential Building Inspector or B2 Commercial Building Inspector; or
  • M1 Residential Mechanical Inspector or M2 Commercial Mechanical Inspector; or
  • P1 Residential Plumbing Inspector or P2 Commercial Plumbing Inspector; or
  • An active State of Colorado Master or Journeyman Plumber’s license; or
  • An active State of Colorado Master or Journeyman Electrician’s license.

Obtaining a 2nd certification within 6 months is a condition of continued employment.

Requires possession of a valid driver’s license.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, motor vehicle records check, drug screen and physical.

 

Building Inspector II  (Salary range: $27.18 – $40.78)

High school diploma or equivalent; and
Three (3) years of building inspection or plans examination experience required; or an equivalent combination of education, formal training, and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties/responsibilities of the position.

  • Requires possession of the certifications and/or licenses required for Building Inspector I position AND an additional one (1) of the following certifications or licenses for a total of three (3) different certifications and/or licenses at time of hire:
  • B1 Residential Building Inspector or B2 Commercial Building Inspector (one of these two certifications is required); and
  • M1 Residential Mechanical Inspector or M2 Commercial Mechanical Inspector; or
  • P1 Residential Plumbing Inspector or P2 Commercial Plumbing Inspector; or
  • An active State of Colorado Master or Journeyman Plumber’s license; or
  • An active State of Colorado Master or Journeyman Electrician’s license

Requires possession of a valid driver’s license.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, motor vehicle records check, drug screen and physical.

 

Building Inspector III  (Salary range: $30.46 – $45.70)

High school diploma or equivalent; and
Five (5) years of building inspection or plans examination experience required; or an equivalent combination of education, formal training, and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties/responsibilities of the position.

Requires possession of the B1 Residential Building Inspector Certification and B2 Commercial Building Inspector Certification or B5 Building Inspector Certification AND at least an additional three (3) of the following certifications or licenses for a total of five (5) different certifications and/or licenses upon hire:

  • M1 Residential Mechanical Inspector or M2 Commercial Mechanical Inspector; or
  • P1 Residential Plumbing Inspector or P2 Commercial Plumbing Inspector; or
  • B3 Building Plans Examiner; or
  • M3 Mechanical Plans Examiner; or
  • P3 Plumbing Plans Examiner; or
  • 77 Commercial Energy Inspector; or
  • 78 Commercial Energy Plans Examiner or 79 Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner; or
  • An active State of Colorado Master or Journeyman Plumber’s license; or
  • An active State of Colorado Master or Journeyman Electrician’s license

Requires possession of a valid driver’s license.
