POSITION: Building Inspector/On-Call SALARY: $30.00/hr. (non-benefited)

Perform a variety of technical duties involved in the enforcement of building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes adopted by the City, including coordination of such enforcement with other related laws and ordinances. This position performs technical and specialized structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical inspections to ensure compliance with the adopted construction codes. This position must work well independently and with the public, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills which support of the City of Brighton’s mission and values.
Example of Duties:
Inspects new and existing residential, commercial and industrial buildings and structures for compliance with adopted building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes before, during and after construction. Assists in the review of residential, commercial and industrial plans for conformance with adopted building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes. Investigates complaints of code violations involving structural, fire and life safety, health and sanitation, or the unauthorized use of buildings and initiate appropriate action to abate hazardous conditions identified by inspection.
Assists with technical aspects of permitting at the One Stop counter. Electronically documents inspection results, correction notices, and other records necessary to the Division. Participates in continuing education and keeps abreast of code changes and City ordinances. Issues notices of violation as required. Performs other related duties as assigned. This is a part time on call position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Principles, practices, methods and techniques of building inspection as it relates to the enforcement of adopted building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes, related laws and ordinances. A wide range of materials and construction methods as utilized in actual practice, and proficient knowledge of the building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes. Ability to: Read and objectively interpret building code requirements along with other laws pertaining to the regulation of buildings. Recognize, evaluate and properly resolve unique problems or situations. Read and interpret construction plans and specifications, maintain records and prepare written reports. Practice proper safety precautions. Review building drawings of both simple and complex designs for conformance with adopted codes and to objectively interpret and apply those codes under the direction of the Chief Building Official.
Tactfully and effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with the public, coworkers and other departments of the City while maintaining effective relationships. Use a personal computer with specialized software necessary for job.
Education and Training:
High School diploma or equivalent. Three (3) years of inspection experience involving building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes, at least two of which were for a county or municipality. Completion of a formal apprentice program for construction trade. College coursework in construction or design related subject. Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, walk, sit, kneel and climb ladders and stairs.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license with safe driving record. Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical or Combination Inspector Certification highly desirable. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Ability to complete FEMA ICS 100 and IS 700 training within six (6) months of hire.
